Values and Emotional Literacy
Calwell Cluster Emotional Literacy - Values Project
The Calwell Cluster of schools has been recognised nationally as a cluster of Good Practice Schools.
We were invited to participate in a national project promoting Values Education in 2006. The Cluster worked collectively to develop a framework which supports the development of Emotional Literacy throughout the cluster community. We worked collaboratively on the project, to establish and document Emotional Literacy Best Practice under the guiding principles of The National Framework for Values Education.
We are committed to using Restorative Practices as the approach to building and maintaining positive relationships throughout the cluster. The development of Emotional Literacy has been recognised as a core element in the success of this approach.
As a result of the project, a comprehensive curriculum was developed based around values and emotional literacy. Each of the schools in the cluster implemented this curriculum into their regular teaching practice.
What is Emotional Literacy?
Emotional Literacy is about developing our understanding of ourselves and our relationships with others to promote mutual well-being and healthier, more compassionate societies. The word Literacy is used rather than intelligence to emphasise the importance of developing and learning – not only for ourselves but also for the contexts in which we live and work.

Our project achieved the following -
- Develop an understanding of community values and how this contributes to the development of emotional literacy.
- Enhance understanding by the wider community of the role of and partnerships between all cluster schools.
- Increase the cooperation between all cluster schools in the ongoing development and delivery of Emotional Literacy programs.
- Develop a Kindergarten to Year 10 Emotional Literacy Curriculum.
- Promote positive relationships between parents, students and school staff.
- Share our achievements and inform the wider community in order to achieve the project’s broader, national purpose of fostering better values education in all Australian Schools.
