Student Support Programs
Our school offers a variety of support structures to assist students in their development of academic and social skills. These include:
- Special Needs Team,
- Learning Assistance Program,
- Reading Recovery Program,
- English as a Second Language,
- Playground Mediators,
- School Counsellor.
Special Needs Team
The special needs team consists of the deputy principal, school counsellor and learning assistance and ESL teachers. This team meets on a regular basis to assist teachers in identifying and meeting specific needs of individual students.
Learning Assistance Program
This program provides support through individual and small group instruction for students experiencing learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy. As well as early intervention strategies in the early years of schooling such as phonemic awareness, guided reading, guided writing, spelling and cross-age tutoring in reading, we also offer the Queanbeyan Reading Program. This program is for Year 5 and 6 students who are ten years or older and who have reading difficulties. This program is conducted daily with the assistance of a small group of dedicated parent volunteers.
Extension programs are also offered for those students requiring further challenges. The development of higher order thinking skills is promoted and practised.
Reading Recovery Program
The Reading Recovery program is an early literacy intervention strategy that identifies and provides support for students in Year 1 who are having difficulty learning to read. Students in the program receive individualised, daily instruction from a specialist reading recovery teacher for a period of 20 weeks.
English as a Second Language program
The ESL program provides support for students from linguistic and culturally diverse backgrounds who are experiencing difficulty learning English language literacy skills. Language support is provided to students either individually or in small groups both within the classroom and in the support room located in the administration building.
School counsellor
Our part-time school counsellor plays a central role in providing professional support and guidance to students, parents and teachers across the school community. The counsellor works closely with everyone concerned to ensure appropriate action is taken in assisting students with special needs. The counsellor may be contacted at Calwell by phoning 62056911.
Playground Mediator Program
All Year 6 students undertake an intensive two day training program focusing on the development of skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, leadership, communication and teamwork. Upon completion of the training, students who wish to become mediators sign a contract that defines the behaviours expected of a mediator, such as leading by example.
The mediators work in pairs and are easily identified on the playground as they wear green basketball singlets. Children are able to approach them with any difficulties they may be experiencing. The mediators discuss the difficulties with them and encourage them to identify and choose appropriate strategies to assist in solving the problem.
