School Board
The School Board is responsible for determining the policies of the school within ACT Department of Education guidelines. Educational philosophy, curriculum, student management, finance, facilities and the effect of Education Department decision and policies are all matters in which the Board may become involved. The Board also works to promote and develop harmonious relationships between the school, the community and community organisations.
The Board is representative of the whole school community. It consists of the principal, two representatives elected by the teaching staff, three parent representatives and one representative of the Department of Education. Elections are held annually.
The Board meets monthly with meetings being open to the public. Minutes of Board meetings are available at the office for perusal. A summary of the main issues and matters dealt with at meetings is regularly included in school newsletters.
Parent Involvement
At Calwell Primary School we see education as a life long process, in which people develop knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes. Schooling is an integral part of this process. Parents are acknowledged as the prime educators of their children, a responsibility shared with teachers. The active participation of parents in the school is encouraged as an effective way of ensuring a strong home/school partnership.
Throughout the school, parents are invited to work with the teachers in a variety of activities. Some of these activities might include, art/craft sessions, assistance with individual reading and writing eg The Queanbeyan Reading Program for senior students, excursions and sports training. (Special training is given to parents who wish to help individual children with reading and writing or library/resource centre techniques and skills.) Teachers also greatly appreciate input from parents with special skills or experiences. These parents are encouraged to present talks or workshops to our students.
Other school activities for parents to become involved in are the School Board, Parents & Citizens Association, school canteen, student banking and book club organisation.
Policies available for parents to read include:
• Student Assessment and Reporting,
• Critical Incidents,
• Student Management & Welfare,
• Home Learning,
• Excursions.
