Quality Learning

Calwell has a well balanced educational program for students from pre-school to Year 6 with a contemporary curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for all learners.   The school’s curriculum is based on ‘Every chance to learn’ the Curriculum framework for ACT schools and the ‘Quality Teaching in ACT Schools’ framework.  Our program aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, caring and respectful young people.

The school concentrates on the development of fundamental skills in literacy and numeracy and Information Technology (IT), which build the foundations for competence and success in other key learning areas such as Science, History, Geography, Technology, The Arts, Language and Health and Physical Education.

The written curriculum at Calwell follows the ACT Curriculum framework.  The framework is organised under:

  • Bands of development,
  • Essential Learning Achievements (ELA) and
  • Markers of progress.

Under the three bands of development; Early childhood (pre-school to Year 2), Later childhood (Year 3 to Year 5) and Early adolescence (Year 6 to Year 8), essential content is specified for each Essential Learning Achievement. The essential content covers subject matter in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Languages, The Arts and Health and Physical Education as well as interdisciplinary skills such as inquiry, using a range of strategies to think and learn, making considered decisions, contributing to group effectiveness and acting with integrity and regard for others. Using Information and Communication Technologies effectively is also an interdisciplinary skill that underpins all other subject areas.
